Riverside Roundabout Construction Will Resume On Monday

Construction on the Riverside roundabout resumed on Monday, as did traffic delays and a brief closure of Woodhull Avenue.

According to Bill Hillman, chief engineer at the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, workers are installing five drainage structures at the intersection of Woodhull Avenue and Nugent Drive. The Woodhull Avenue closure was necessary when workers pulled up the asphalt to connect the drainage structures on opposite sides of the street.

The project’s next steps, according to Mr. Hillman, include curb work around the Shell and Valero gas stations and creation of lane splitter islands at the approaches to the roundabout. He said that it is too early to know if those projects will prompt more road closures. “They may,” he said. “It’s a fluid operation at this point.”

He added that, “weather permitting,” the whole $5.25 million roundabout project—which began in early September but was then suspended for the winter in December, and entails transforming the current one-lane circle to two lanes—is still on track for completion in December 2018.

The circle serves five feeder streets—Flanders Road, Nugent Drive and Riverleigh, Lake and Peconic avenues—and often fails to handle the high volume of traffic on those streets, resulting in frequent backups both in the circle and on the approaching roads.
