Riverside Traffic Circle Widening Work Will Commence In 2016 After $4 Million Transfer

Jun 3, 2015 9:49 AM

The Suffolk County Legislature officially transferred $4 million in funding Tuesday that allows the widening of the Riverside traffic circle to be completed next year, two years earlier than planned, according to Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman.

More than a dozen community activists and officials urged the legislative body to transfer the money prior to Tuesday’s vote. The transfer comes a week after more than 250 community members signed a petition urging the Suffolk County Legislature’s Capital Budget Working Group to reallocate the cash and move up the start date for the project, which is a critical component of ongoing revitalization efforts in Riverside.

The work calls for transforming the estimated 80-year-old traffic circle into an oval-shaped, two-lane roundabout, and also includes the installation of sidewalks and crosswalks. The plan itself was finalized in November when Southampton Town voters approved a land swap that gave the county a small lot of parkland on the northwest side of the circle, near the Peconic River, which will be cleared to widen the circle.

Representatives of Renaissance Downtowns, the master developer that has been tasked by the town with redeveloping Riverside, last month drafted an action plan that outlines a proposed overlay zoning district for the hamlet. The plan, if adopted, will give property owners the option of altering the zoning of their properties in order to attract new businesses to the area.

Sean McLean, the vice president of planning and development for Renaissance and a Flanders resident himself, previously stated that he was concerned about the message that would be sent to potential investors, as well as Riverside residents, if the widening project was pushed back for two years.
