Mastic Man Dies After Being Pulled From Pool In Remsenburg Saturday

Aug 12, 2015 1:19 PM

A professional painter working at a home in Remsenburg drowned on Saturday afternoon after authorities said he decided to go for a swim in a pool on his break.

Three coworkers of 28-year-old Marto Hernandez-Us of Mastic, who were hired to paint a house on South Country Road, found him unconscious and floating in a backyard pool, according to Southampton Town Police.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa said the incident occurred at 180 South Country Road, a property owned by Jerry Fishman of New York City, according to town records. Det. Sgt. Costa said the other painters told investigators that Mr. Hernandez had taken a break at around 2:45 p.m. and decided to go for a swim in the in-ground pool.

Roughly 15 to 20 minutes later, the other painters found Mr. Hernandez-Us floating in the pool, she said. They told police that Mr. Hernandez-Us was not a strong swimmer, Det. Sgt. Costa said.

The three men pulled him out of the water, called 911 and received instructions from a dispatcher on how to administer CPR.

The Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance responded to the scene and transported Mr. Hernandez-Us to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Det. Sgt. Costa said the homeowners were not home at the time of the drowning.

She added that it was the crew’s first day on the job and it was unclear whether Mr. Fishman gave them permission to use the pool.

A came across a "painter" at my complex squatting behind a dumpster doing who knows what. How is it that "The Hamptons" could be so sketchy.
