Student Sues Riverhead High School Principal And School District In Federal Court

Aug 20, 2019 5:37 PM

A Riverhead High School student who accused the school’s principal of inappropriate behavior is now suing him, the school district, current and past administrators, and current and past School Board members in federal court.

High school senior Anastasia Stapon, 18, held a press conference in May to accuse high school principal Charles Regan, a Quogue resident, of forcibly kissing her in his office a week prior, and sexually grooming her for months prior to that.

In response to the allegations, the school district reassigned Mr. Regan, a tenured employee, with pay, while the case was being investigated.

A complaint was filed last Thursday, August 15, in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and makes claims of sexual battery, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, sexual assault, sex discrimination, civil rights violations and “intentional infliction of extreme emotional distress.” It also alleges breach of fiduciary duties, counseling and psychological malfeasance, fraud, negligent supervision and negligent hiring and retention.

The 40-page complaint called Mr. Regan “a sexual predator who sexually preyed upon young girl students under his charge as principal.” A specific monetary amount was not requested in the complaint documents.

Ms. Stapon is being represented by John Ray of Ray, Mitev & Associates in Miller Place. He is also representing another woman, a former student at Eastport-South Manor schools, who has made similar accusations against Mr. Regan.

Punish and fire then for their violations. Don't send them away with a BONUS and a recommendation to the next school...
