Willie Nelson To Play At Montauk's Surf Lodge On Sunday

Jun 4, 2013 5:15 PM

Country music legend Willie Nelson will perform at the Surf Lodge in Montauk on Sunday, June 9, starting at 7 p.m.

The Surf Lodge has recommended that concertgoers arrive by 6 p.m. because parking is limited and a large crowd is anticipated.

East Hampton Town Police Chief Eddie Ecker Jr. said his department is currently working out a plan to reduce traffic congestion and ensure concertgoers' safety.

"We're anticipating extra officers down there and we'll probably put Marine Patrol officers by the water in the backside of the place," he said on Monday. "Only so many people will be allowed into the event and we're working closely with the East Hampton fire marshal and code enforcement people."

Chief Ecker said people who are not going to the event can help alleviate traffic by going around the area and not through it.

"Our biggest concern is certainly that pedestrian traffic stays off the road, and that cabs and other cars don't block the streets so that emergency vehicles can get through as safely as possible."

To reserve a seat, the Surf Lodge has requested that patrons donate $100 to the Montauk Playhouse restoration project by logging onto www.montaukplayhouse.org. The Surf Lodge has a listing of other upcoming shows at its website, www.thesurflodge.com.

That was, and is Eric Clapton.

All greats in their own way. But Willie is a troubadour, Eric is a master of the guitar.

Definitely news, and the local authorities better be ready because here is the build-up (from Mr. Nelson's website):

Thursday -- Hard Rock Cafe NYC
Friday -- Westbury Theater
Saturday -- Caesars Atlantic City
Sunday -- Surf Lodge -- "FREE" is stated on the website

Mr. Nelson has a huge fan base, and the word "Free" on his event calendar is ominous IMO.

Hopefully the EH authorities can contact Mr. Nelson's staff, and ask that he announce at this concerts that ...more

PS -- Mr. Nelson's website has a "Tickets" link for this concert, which leads to the Surf Lodge's website. The "Concerts" link there opens a page which shows all the summer concerts, and which states at the top: "All performances courtesy of The Surf Lodge and our generous sponsors."

There is NO mention of the $100 donation, and no heads-up that this concert is sold out (which it may not be today, but will be very soon IMO).

The EH Town PD should work with the Surf Lodge ASAP to ...more

PS2 -- The Hard Rock Cafe event is a celebration of Mr. Nelson's 80th birthday (Happy Birthday Willie!), and the Twitter feed on the home page of his website is jumpin' with the build-up for the entire weekend.

Perhaps 27east readers with Twitter feeds can keep us updated.

PS3 -- Mr. Nelson's Twitter feed has 255,000 followers, and the EH Town PD would be well advised to get active on Twitter ASAP.

Ya know this is a recipe for a distaster. Willie is to huge to be playing in such a small venue. The residents who complained about the surf lodge will be complaining big time. That whole road is going to be at a standstill. Willie should play where there is more room like the ranch or something.

Tell ya what chief, you try to go to this concert on Sunday evening, and let us know what you think from inside the Surf Lodge!

You're dreamin' here IMO if you think this is a "get over it" event. Judging from your proactive posts on other threads about budget over-runs, municipal bankruptcies and so forth, your flippant comment here surprises me (especially if you were in fact ever the chief of any PD).

My comment wasn't meant to be flip. The issue is that a concert like this brings money and people for small business. We need to support small business because it is such a short season. That being said we still need to put a leash on govt spending and benefits. As far as Blank goes; You still like making your passive aggressive comments about my opinions. I don't appreciate it and if you would like to make one in person let me know. I don't think you would like the response bully boy.

Your point is well taken about supporting local business, but with events like this too much of a good thing could be way too much. It is a question of scale, priorities and planning.

Large PROFIT-MAKING events like this require incredible planning and manpower from the Town PD and other agencies. Will the Surf Lodge be required to cover these extra costs in order "to put a leash on govt spending?"

The Town Code has struggled in recent years to keep up with charity events (which ...more

PS -- The I LOVE MONTAUK FaceBook page has an entry from 23 hours ago saying this concert is sold out.

BUT . . .

Both websites -- Mr. Wilson's and the Surf Lodge -- have no updates about the charity aspect of this event, nor does a site called myfreeconcert. The BlogoSphere contains article titles like "Free Willie Nelson & Family Concert."

Maybe this event will turn out to be "get over it," but the Town PD must plan as if it is going to be a nightmare. Costly!

Tell you what, Chief. You answer the many questions I've posed to you on these threads. Cite a credible source for what you claim. And at the end of the day, if you still think you are being "bullied" or merely held accountable, you got a date.

The page for this concert at the Montauk Playhouse site indicates that this concert is sold out. Mr. Nelson's Tour page, and the Surf Lodge Concerts page, say nothing about this.

EH Town should require the Surf Lodge to update its Concerts page to indicate that the concert is sold out IMO, and the Town Code should be amended to require actions like this when a public event is advertised on the Internet.

Ditto for Mr. Nelson's site.

See below, the Surf Lodge has posted the sold-out notice. Well done.

I hope everyone has a great time. If this is "my tax dollars at work", I support it and would politely suggest that this is not another Max Yasgur's farm.

Is the Blessing of the Fleet still also scheduled for Sunday at 5 PM?

Should be quite an evening . . .
By PBR (4956), Southampton on Jun 6, 13 6:12 PM
The Surf Lodge has posted the following notice in a red box at the top of its Concerts page.

Well done!

"Due to our overwhelming capacity for the Willie Nelson performance, we cannot honor general admittance on Sunday, June 9th. In respect of our community, we ask that you do not try to get access to The Surf Lodge on Sunday, June 9th without an admissions ticket."

Agoraphobia (from Greek αγορά, "marketplace"; and φόβος/φοβία, -phobia) is an anxiety disorder characterized by anxiety in situations where the sufferer perceives the environment as being difficult to escape or get help. These situations include, but are not limited to, wide-open spaces, as well as uncontrollable social situations such as may be met in shopping malls, airports, Willie Nelson concerts and on bridges. A new article has proactively indicated that people without tickets should not try to come to the Surf Lodge tonight.

The I LOVE MONTAUK FaceBook page has a new post also.

Well done to all. Hopefully everyone will have a great day, and the burdens of our dedicated first responders will not be unnecessarily challenged by the national invitation (now modified) to a "Free" Willie Nelson concert in Montauk tonight.

Happy 80th birthday Willie!
