Hampton Bays Native Missing From Coast Guard Post On Staten Island

Oct 1, 2014 12:49 PM

The New York Police Department is searching for a Hampton Bays native who was reported missing last week.

Christopher Montgomery, a 2006 graduate of Hampton Bays High School and current radio operator for the U.S. Coast Guard on Staten Island, was reported missing on the afternoon of Thursday, September 25, according to a spokesman for the police department.

He noted that Mr. Montgomery, 26, was reported missing by a family member, although it is not clear where he was last seen. Mr. Montgomery had been stationed at Fort Wadsworth, located on the northeast side of the island and near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Police said there have been no leads, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The U.S. Coast Guard does not suspect foul play in the disappearance of Mr. Montgomery, spokesman Charles Rowe said on Tuesday, adding that nothing has been ruled out at this time.

Mr. Rowe said the Coast Guard has been searching for Mr. Montgomery since last Thursday morning, when he failed to report for duty.

Noting that the search has not been limited to Staten Island, Mr. Rowe said Mr. Montgomery’s family has been receiving updates throughout the search process. His parents, who now live in Manorville, could not be reached this week.

“I would say we’ve been in constant contact with his family,” Mr. Rowe said. “We keep them fully in the loop on a daily basis.”

Hampton Bays resident Scott Saunders, a longtime friend of Mr. Montgomery, said he learned that his friend was missing on Tuesday morning.

“I was totally shocked,” Mr. Saunders said. “First of all, I couldn’t believe he was missing this long without knowing about it. He’s not the type of guy to just go missing like this. I just hope we find him soon.”

Mr. Saunders noted that Mr. Montgomery joined the Coast Guard shortly after graduating from high school and has been stationed at multiple locations during the past eight years.

Police described Mr. Montgomery as being white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue shorts, a gray hooded sweatshirt and black flip-flops.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-8477 (TIPS) or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577.
