The Hampton Bays boys and girls cross country teams hosted their annual Peconic Invitational at Red Creek Park on Thursday, September 12.

Mattituck won both the boys and girls varsity 5K races. The boys won with a team total of 41 points, just three points less than host Hampton Bays. Kelvin Granados, a junior, was the first Bayman to cross the finish line, third overall in the 39-person field, in 19:44.87. Johnny Gonzalez, another junior, placed seventh in 20:09.99 and sophomore Arents Hansen rounded out the top ten in 20:34.82.

Riverhead senior Megan Kielbasa won the girls varsity race in 21:16.44, but Mattituck was able to bunch together more finishers in the top 10 to take first place as a team. Payton Maddaloni was the first Lady Tucker to cross the finish line, second overall, in 21:48.82.

There were also freshmen 1.5-mile races. Southold won the boys race, while Riverhead won the girls race.

Both Hampton Bays teams lost their season opening dual meets on September 10. The boys lost, 21-38, to Southampton while the girls lost to Bayport/Blue Point.
