Police: Woman Robbed Outside Hampton Bays Diner Early Sunday Morning

Jul 12, 2011 6:46 PM

A man and woman, both of Hampton Bays, were arrested and charged with robbing a woman outside the Hampton Bays Diner early Sunday morning after the duo encouraged her to ride with them in lieu of a taxi and she balked at the fee they demanded afterward, according to Southampton Town Police.

Corey Bourgard, 23, of South Valley Road and Jessica Burghardt, 21, of Fanning Avenue were soliciting “taxi” customers along Dune Road when their victim, a 26-year-old woman from Astoria, Queens, accepted a ride with them to the Hampton Bays Diner, Detective Sergeant Randy Hintze said.

When the trio reached the diner, Mr. Bourgard and Ms. Burghardt wanted about $20 in payment, but the Queens woman did not think she should be charged that much, Det. Sgt. Hintze said.

Police were called at about 2 a.m. to the Montauk Highway restaurant, where the victim told them that the pair had forcibly taken about $25 in cash from her, then fled eastbound in a red Ford Explorer with the man behind the wheel.

As they searched the area, officers discovered that the Explorer had been pulled over for speeding by State Police on Foster Avenue.

The victim identified the pair and they were placed under arrest by Town Police at about 2:30 a.m. Each was charged with robbery in the second degree, a felony, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor.

Mr. Bourgard and Ms. Burghardt were arraigned at Southampton Town Justice Court later that day. They each posted $500 bail and are due back in court on July 13, court officials said.

Colin Patrick Astarita, the attorney representing Ms. Burghardt, issued a statement via email on Tuesday: “My client was merely a passenger in a vehicle driven by a friend of hers. The driver was attempting to shuttle bar patrons from Neptunes and the Beach Bar back to town for payment. It is our position that Mr. Bourgard clearly indicated to the bar patron that he expected to be paid by the young woman for the ride to the diner. In any event, my client, Jessica Burghardt, was only a passenger in the car and adamantly denies any force or threat of force to this passenger. Ms. Burghardt has never been arrested and is completely shocked that she has been charged with a violent felony given the facts of the case. Her family and friends are disappointed that a more thorough investigation was not completed prior to the filing of these very serious charges.”

Maybe they need to hire one of those private security companies.

Maybe they need to sell to an owner who cares about running a diner instead of a hip hop dance club

Agreed. Is the Diner legally allowed to operate a club there? It's turning into a real crime magnet. The police should send some undercover agents in there to see what's going on at night. Between the Diner and Dream, that family sure is
doing it's part to see that HB sinks into western suffolk depravity....

$20 from Dune Rd to the Diner on a Saturday night? Sounds like a deal to me! These cab companies out here are the worst with pricing

Hampton Bays Diner and Dream Nite Club really know how to destroy a neighborhood. The owners should be put in jail with all the illegal things going on.
Nothing has been done to either of them (father and son) Why doesnt the State Liquor Authority come in.?
