Unexploded mortar shell and spine both discovered on Ponquogue Beach

Jun 30, 2010 5:36 PM

Two startling discoveries were made at Ponquogue Beach in Hampton Bays on Wednesday morning.

A beachgoer spotted a rusty mortar shell on the sand just east of the concession stand at around 11 a.m. Less than a half hour earlier, someone had discovered a large portion of a spine washed up between the Ponquogue Beach pavilion and Road I, according to police.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Suffolk County Police Emergency Service Section personnel detonated the approximately 10-inch mortar, described as “intact” by police, without incident, as beachgoers lounged hundreds of feet away. Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance were on standby at the scene.

The eastern side of Ponquogue Beach was closed throughout the day, but the western side remained open. The scene was cleared by police at 4:40 p.m.

Southampton Town Police Detective Tim Wilson said beachgoers alerted lifeguards about the spine—which could be human or animal—and the lifeguards called the Southampton Town Bay Constable, who in turn notified police.

Town Police will deliver the spine to the Suffolk County medical examiner for identification, the detective said. He added that they expect results in the next couple of days.

Anyone with information about either incident should call the Town Police at (631) 728-3400, or the Crime Tips Hotline at (631) 728-3454, or send an e-mail to crimetips@southamptontownny.gov. All information and sources will be kept confidential.

Good thing they broke out the "Hurt Locker" outfit to investigate a rusty shell. Sort of like using tongs for a banana on a grill that's not lit. Classic!

Except that I don't think that HarborDad has ever seen a 60mm mortar round detonate, so he can afford to sit in Sag and made snide remarks.
By Frank Wheeler (1826), Northampton on Jul 1, 10 6:12 PM
An intact mortar round ? I think I'd be more worried about how it got there or who put it there ! What was the approximate age of this ordnance ? Rusty? Big Deal ! Any metal will rust if left on the beach for more than a couple of weeks . Anyone else think there might be more to this story ?

Reagan is the one who SLASHED the tax rates for the wealthy. For thirty years before Reagan, the tax rate that applied to the wealthy built infrastructure, and maintained it in this country.

After Reagan's cuts, well, that's when things started to spiral out of control. It looked good in the beginning, but, the as the upper echelon retained more income, the middle class remained at a stagnant level.

His actions, as well as Clinton's deregulation of the banks, are what have us ...more

Ronald Reagan was a puppet for coporate America. He, with his tax cuts for the wealthy allowed Thomas Jefferson's worst nightmare to be realized. And, that nightmare is that corporations would become the next aristocracy. That is why he implemented the Charter system. The same system the "Robber Barons" did away with...

"In the arts of buying and selling capital itself men grew both more subtle and more daring. Progress was registered not only in water power and steam engines, but in the rise and spread of “jointstock companies” before 1840, in the growth of bourses or exchanges which dealt in such capital. The most notable of these at the time of the Civil War was the Stock Exchange of the City of New York, which by its natural advantages became ...more
