Three Men Rescued After Fishing Boat Capsizes South Of Shinnecock Inlet

Jul 27, 2015 5:20 PM

Three men were pulled from the ocean by the U.S. Coast Guard after their fishing boat capsized last week.

The men were fishing about two miles south of the Shinnecock Inlet last Wednesday, July 22, when swells began crashing over the stern of their 23-foot boat at about 3:20 p.m., according to a Coast Guard spokesman.

William Stevensen, 71, of East Quogue, the captain of the unnamed boat, then attempted to return to shore, but the vessel’s engine would not start, authorities said. Waves eventually capsized the boat.

A passing boat, the Kariboo, spotted two of the men sitting on the hull of the capsized vessel and another man floating in the water. The captain of the Kariboo reported the incident, and the Coast Guard was dispatched to the scene.

Neither the captain nor his passengers—Ralph Lamonico, 61, and John Mariani, 65—suffered injuries, according to the Coast Guard. Officials could not provide hometowns for the two men. Additionally, two of the men were wearing life preservers, though authorities could not clarify who.

Mr. Stevensen’s fishing boat was towed back to shore a short time later.
