County Road 39 Closed Monday After Two-Vehicle Accident

May 4, 2011 9:58 AM

A two-vehicle head-on car collision in Southampton Monday afternoon left both drivers with minor injuries and forced the closure of County Road 39 in both directions, according to an official on the scene.

Southampton Fire Department Captain Chris Brenner said the two cars, a black Jeep SUV, driven by a woman, and a truck owned by the Oceanview Landscape company in Southampton, which was being operated by a man, crashed into one another near the Lexus car dealership and the Capri Hotel on County Road 39A at 2:28 p.m.. Both individuals sustained only minor injuries that were not serious, he said. The reasons for the crash were unknown at the time, Capt. Brenner said. He could not identify the drivers.

“We’re trying to investigate at this time,” he said on the scene.

County Road 39 was closed on both east and westbound lanes between North Main Street and David Whites Lane, Capt. Brenner said.

This is the second time in a few days that they have had to close down 39 because of an accident. The road is dangerous. Period. No more commercial development. Enough.

County road 39 is a death trap. Sane folks know it and we must fight to stop it from getting worse. 7-11s and grocery stores would render it unusable. Best wishes to all those injured. God speed.

The County has plans to add a second westbound lane from the 7-11 to the intersection with 27. If you think the road is dangerous now, just wait. Time for everyone to start contacting the County and demand that they address the safety issues on this road before someone is seriously injured.

Why is It always the road's fault? Drive safely and carefully and collisions are avoided. I'm sure the operators of the 2 vehicles involved had nothing to do with it. Glad they were not seriously hurt.

the center turn lane obviously had something to do with it, how else would there be a head-on unless there was a medical reason. here's a tip: dont miss-use the center turn lane, period.

The center turn lane is used as a merge lane - frightening to see and another disaster waiting to happen.

CR 39 is poorly designed and Ill-equipped to handle the kind of traffic we see building for the summer. The center turn lane is frequently misused and people often enter way too early.

Funinthesun, the road is not "always" to blame, but, in this case in particular, its design most definitely comes into play.

As a professional, I have to say that I have spent a good bit of time on the road. Driving down 39, there are traffic lights to break up the flow of traffic. Only thing is, I usually see people drive like rabbits going at it.

After a stoplight, lights do turn red, as we all know. After the light changes, there is a gap in traffic. Then I watch as people travel over 40, close the gaps, and leave people stuck in a parking lot. Then, sometimes they get impatient, and bad things happen. ...more
