Town Earns Gold Award From Car Free Day Long Island

The Town of Southampton has received the highest level of achievement for the Municipality Challenge Award, the Gold Award, from Car Free Day Long Island. The distinction comes as the town encouraged both town employees and others to leave their vehicles at home and take alternative transportation to work, including the South Fork Commuter Connection or to car pool with co-workers on September 20.

Southampton’s participation helped the Long Island chapter of Car Free Day receive a total of 5,824 pledges to go car free that resulted, according to the sponsoring organization, in 138,000 miles of driving and 67 tons of carbon emissions avoided.

Great news, leave vehicles at home and look for alternative transportation to work.

Is the South Fork Commuter Connection carbon neutral? Any reports or studies on this? It is not cost effective. It spills more carbon into the air and is a safety problem along with traffic issues. The extra trains back up cars in locations such as Hampton Bays. The commuter connection needs to be reviewed by SH and LIRR as the addition carbon from trains and the cars waiting at the RR crossing backing ...more
