It hasn’t taken long for the Pierson/Bridgehampton girls volleyball team to announce its presence this season. The Lady Whalers cruised in a pair of straight-set victories during the last week, the most recent a 3-0 dust up of Port Jefferson on Monday night.

“The team is looking great,” head coach Donna Fischer said on Tuesday as her team got back to practice to prepare for a match at the Ross School on Friday, September 13, at 4 p.m.

Pierson opened the season with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-16) win over Southampton at home, where the usual suspects provided the spark for the Lady Whalers. Junior Gylia Dryden had 10 kills and Sofia Mancino and Olivia Cassone combined for 21 aces from the service line.

“Gylia has worked on her timing and she’s hitting and blocking better than ever,” Fischer said about the junior from Bridgehampton. “Last year, her timing was off a little, but now she’s getting it.”

Pierson’s returning All-State player Sam Cox played an all-around strong game, and has been central to the team’s development so far this season, according to her head coach.

“Samantha Cox is swinging harder than ever,” Fischer said about her senior outside hitter. “Sofia has really matured and is just taking charge of the court with serves and assists and being a leader. Olivia, our libero, is also a tremendous leader.”

Pierson knocked off Port Jefferson in straight sets, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-13, on Monday to improve to 2-0 on the season. Following Friday’s match at Ross, the team will play a tournament this weekend at Eastport-South Manor High School before returning home to face Hampton Bays on September 16 at 4:30 p.m.
