Jul 24, 2019 10:59 AM

A Riverhead man was arrested while burglarizing a North Sea residence Friday night, Southampton Town Police said in a press release.

Edin Vargas, 19, was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree burglary and one count of second-degree criminal mischief, all felonies, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, the release stated.

At 9:10 p.m. Town Police received a call reporting an act of vandalism in progress at a North Sea beach colony residence, according to the release. Responding officers found damage to almost every window and “significant damage” to the inside of the unoccupied house. They later found the suspect in a neighboring dwelling, police said.

Bail was set at $15,500, which as of Wednesday morning, he had not posted, according to Town Police Lieutenant James Kiernan.

Members of the Town Police patrol division and the Southampton Village Police canine officer responded to the call.
