@27East - when are you going to do a story on the number of accidents on CR-39 - this road, how people use this road, and the lack of a plan for this road are some of the biggest issues our community faces.

..and please update us on the Great Peconic Causeway, the most beautiful drive in America.

Amen. It is in dire need of enforcement and structural change...fewer intersections, fewer turns. Right now it is both local road and superhighway, with tragic conflicts that won’t change by magic.

VT -- you mean the Shirley-to-Boston Causeway?

Complete with wind turbine towers and suspension bridges at the major ocean shipping passages [LI Sound and Vineyard/Nantucket Tidal Pool], numerous tide-turbines, in the continuous seawall from Montauk to Chatham MA, and various new mini-islands offshore with legal gambling and seafood restaurants, etc..

Nero,Its not as involved as that one. This one runs from Riverhead to points east on North and South Forks alleviating pressures on inland roads and simplifying construction and eminent domain costs and suits.

Kudos to Tom’s excellent driving and the fast action of the highway crews who had the roadway opened in no time.

When is the SH Press going to do an extensive report on CR39 and the death road it truly is. They can start with tabulating how many fatalities have occurred on this road in just the last 5 years?

The road is not the problem. People are.

People are part of the problem but the design and conditions of the road itself are also part of the problem.

If the IDIOTS did the speed limit the problem would be greatly reduced alphabet soup

Agree Mr Z , a lot of folks drive that road like they're auditioning for NASCAR! People have businesses along the highway and they , and their customers put their lives at risk entering and exiting due to IDIOTS speeding and weaving through traffic. IMHO what's needed is enforcement of the speed limit , while there are few places to pull over the offending driver CAMERAS would be able to ticket them. Perhaps a twice a week mass enforcement effort could take place, get the speeder on radar and pull ...more

Was there 3 accidents yesterday ?? Evening commute was rather congested....

It might be wise to put police on side roads or in parking lots to monitor speeding in both directions from 6 to 9 and from 3-7 each day. This seems like a no-brainer. Where is the law enforcement that advances PUBLIC SAFETY?
By localcitizen (106), Southampton on May 3, 19 7:43 AM
It's a simple solution and it does not require a new half million dollar study. ENFORCE THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT.

At the same time cars are being detoured and people are jumping on Montauk Highway, a car wound up 50 feet in the woods on Montauk Highway. So one lane was closed. Thankfully it was the eastbound lane or we would have been trapped.

How about cameras to ticket speeders for safety reasons?Cheap solution. Will also produce $$$ as an extra, probably pay for itself.

More traffic lights and left turn lanes to slow down traffic and increase safety. give me a like if you want a left turn light at Tuckahoe road heading west?

Cameras, put a traffic light at every intersection. Really slooow it down...
By knitter (1797), Southampton on May 3, 19 1:59 PM
Speed cameras are a no brainer. More turning options are the exact opposite of what is needed. And, by the way, everyone remember that speeders are gonna speed. If not on CR39, they will speed around avoiding CR39. So beware the unintended consequences.
