Kate Browning Running Against Lee Zeldin For Congressional Seat In 2018

Oct 12, 2017 1:07 PM

Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning is officially challenging Lee Zeldin for his congressional seat in 2018.

Ms. Browning, 58 years old and from Shirley, has served as 3rd District Suffolk County legislator since 2005 and will finish out her maximum consecutive terms this year with no option to run for reelection. She recently switched her party affiliation from Working Families to Democrat in preparation for her 1st District congressional bid.

Her announcement comes on the heels of Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr.’s decision to opt out of the race; the pair are friends and were reluctant to run against each other in a primary.

Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Ms. Browning worked as a bus driver and for her local chapter of the Transportation Workers Union prior to being elected legislator. Based on a press release from her campaign, she intends to run strongly on her working-class roots.

“When I first ran as a school bus driver against an incumbent who was part of the political establishment, no one thought I could win, but I did,” it said. “I was repeatedly reelected because I never forget where I come from and who I am there to represent.”

She joins a crowded field of announced Democrat candidates: Vivian Viloria-Fisher, a former Suffolk County legislator from East Setauket; Elaine DiMasi, a former physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory who lives in Ronkonkoma; Brendon Henry, a bartender from Center Moriches; Perry Gershon, chief investment officer at Jefferies LoanCore LLC from East Hampton; and David Pechefsky, a New York City Council staffer who currently lives in Brooklyn but plans to move to the district.

A union bus driver exiled from Ireland who sponsored the red light camera ticketing program. Solid choice.

A full throated socialist (that is what the deceptive moniker "Working Families" is meant to deflect from) who believes redistribution is the only path to prosperity, not productive businesses and employment.

Why do you think all these folks are lining up to challenge Lee Zeldin? Because he has wide voter support? Because he’s a hard target? Because he’s a great campaigner? Because lots of people buy Trump’s line the way he does?

None of the above. In fact, The Honorable Lee is going to be pretty close to a pushover, given the state the Trump GOP is going to have us in a year from now. But Lee has his own weaknesses, even without Trump’s help. He should have gone ...more

If I remember correctly, Anna Throne-Holst wasn't your first choice as your party's challenger, so you're being consistent here.

But who exactly do you see the Democrats putting up to make a credible challenge against the two-term GOP incumbent? Do you REALLY think he's a "pushover," or is that just political bushwaa?
