Southampton Town Patrolman's Benevolent Association Endorses Candidates

Aug 15, 2017 2:46 PM

The Southampton Town Patrolman’s Benevolent Association announced its political endorsements this week, putting the organization’s support behind all three incumbent members of the Southampton Town Board.

According to a press release from the association, the PBA has endorsed Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, an Independence Party member, in his first reelection bid. The organization also endorsed incumbent Town Board members Stan Glinka, a Republican, and Julie Lofstad, a Democrat.

“It’s nice to be able to pick up the phone, to be able to go to Town Hall and to have somebody take the time and listen,” Southampton Town PBA President Kevin Gwinn said of Mr. Schneiderman.

For this November’s election, the association is also backing Republican Lance Aldrich for Southampton Town Highway Superintendent; he is challenging longtime Superintendent Alex Gregor, a member of the Independence Party who has been cross-endorsed by the Democratic Party. Mr. Aldrich worked under Mr. Gregor as general supervisor until the highway superintendent had the position eliminated in 2015.

On Monday, Mr. Gwinn explained that his organization’s decision to endorse Mr. Aldrich over the incumbent was based on their prior interactions, with Mr. Gwinn noting that the police and highway departments had a “great working relationship” prior to Mr. Aldrich’s termination.

Additionally, the PBA has endorsed Democrat Bridget Fleming, who is seeking her second term representing the Suffolk County’s 2nd Legislative District, which spans from Moriches to Montauk and includes Shelter Island. She will be challenged by Heather Collins, a Republican from East Quogue who is employed by the Suffolk County Board of Elections and has, to date, made two unsuccessful bids to unseat State Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr.

Yo, Crow's Nest, wake up, John Bouvier's not running this year. If he were running, the PBA likely would endorse him, as he's one of the ablest people in Town government. Anyway, let's talk again in two years.
