Guardian Angels Come To The East End

The Guardian Angels on patrol in Hampton Bays on Friday night. DANA SHAW
Sep 7, 2016 11:00 AM

A gang-busting group that rose to prominence in New York City in the early 1980s has decided to extend its reach to the South Fork.

Donning their signature red berets and jackets, the Guardian Angels began their night watch last weekend, patrolling the streets of Hampton Bays and Southampton Village. The volunteers hope to put a damper on what the organization’s founder, Curtis Sliwa, says is increasing gang activity involving MS-13 and the 18th Street Gang.

“I can tell that they are beginning to grow in numbers there, and you cannot let them grow, because they want conflict with one another,” Mr. Sliwa said of the gangs.

In the late 1970s in New York City, robberies and burglaries were up and drug use was on the rise. Mr. Sliwa saw that police patrols were scarce and decided to start the Guardian Angels to help fight crime by patrolling the subways. Beginning in 1979, volunteers rode the subways without weapons and looked for gang members who were accosting and robbing other riders. If they witnessed a crime, the Guardian Angels detained the muggers until the police came.

Mr. Sliwa said he has been observing the South Fork for the past year, and his organization plans to focus its efforts mainly on Friday and Saturday nights.

The move to patrol these areas, according to Mr. Sliwa, was speeded up after the recent home invasion in Southampton Village and the stabbing that took place outside a tavern in Hampton Bays in May.

Detective Sergeant Lisa Costa of the Southampton Town Police Department said the victims and the suspects involved in the stabbing at Charlie Brown’s Bar and Grill in Hampton Bays are connected to the 18th Street gang and MS-13, respectively.

Along with being one of the four suspects in the bar stabbing, Marvin Siciliano-Nunez, 20, of Hampton Bays, was also arrested in connection to a home invasion in Southampton Village, during which village police said he threatened to hit a 19-year-old woman with a baseball bat if she did not perform oral sex on him.

Mr. Sliwa said he has reached out to both the town and village police departments about the Guardian Angels’ presence, but he has not heard back. He added that he planned to reach out again after the Labor Day holiday weekend, and to reach out to the Hampton Bays Civic Association as well.

On Wednesday, Detective Sergeant Herman Lamison of the Southampton Village Police said he had not met with the Guardian Angels yet, but said if they want to patrol the streets, they can, as long as they follow the village code. As far as the group detaining individuals under police officers arrive, Det. Sgt. Lamison said he would have a sitdown with the Guardian Angels first to discuss it.

The Guardian Angels, according to Mr. Sliwa, are already patrolling in Riverhead and Greenport, and have encountered numerous members of MS-13 and the 18 Street gangs. The communities, he said, have been supportive and are “pumped up” about the organization’s presence.

Eventually, Mr. Sliwa wants to have Guardian Angels embedded in East End communities, so that his crews do not have to commute from the city every weekend.

“Their job is to recruit other people in the area who want to get involved in that specific patrol,” he said. “It will be our job to recruit, train and graduate members of the community into a patrol.”

Where was the home invasion in the village?

Little Plains Road or somewhere around there. Early August. If you go back on 27east I'm sure you can find the article.

Who feels unsafe walking the streets of Southampton Village at night? If anyone feels the need for added street protection in Southampton, they are mentally disturbed and must have never been anywhere else in the world. Any place east of Speonk has to be among some of the safest streets in America. You can pick any hour of the night, and any dark road east of Speonk and it would be safe to walk it alone with money hanging out of your pockets. You have more chance of being hit by a car than being ...more

Yeah... I have to say this whole thing seems a little crazy to me. I appreciate the positive message about community members getting involved, but wouldn't the Guardian Angels' services by more useful elsewhere? Not even once have I worried about the threat of violence or gang activity on the East End impacting me personally. I worry much more about the rampant drinking and driving that occurs out here!
By SH_Res (342), Southampton on Sep 3, 16 9:15 AM
Get your head out of the sand. If you can't see the signs of increased gang presence on the east end, HB specifically, you just aren't looking.
By dnice (2346), Hampton Bays on Sep 14, 16 8:50 PM
Will they be patrolling in wheelchairs? I'm sure this will go over very well in Southampton Village. Guy never met a camera he didn't love.

Thank you. Shady illegals are everywhere and under this administration have an elevated sense of confidence and entitlement.

By SlimeAlive (1181), Southampton on Sep 3, 16 7:29 AM
Hampton Bays or the Reservation may have issues, but any violence is isolated to a specific demographic and does not spill over to the general public. If you are out drinking and partying at some shady night club, that is another story. If it is unsafe in the Town of Southhampton, then NYC is a lawless, Mad Max, every man and child for themselves kind of place, and we know this is not the case.

Hampton Bays is a dump. Either vote for Trump so he can clean it out, or better get out before your house values plummet even more if you are dumb enough to vote for Hillary.

I guess you didn't pass reading comprehension in school. The best he can do is to deport the illegals that have overrun HB and other places across the country. I don't want to be a part of Mexico, but if you do, don't let the door hit you in the rear when you vamos.

And "dreamers" like you, who think that the Donald is going to be loading up the buses after he is sworn in are dangerous. It is a Trojan horse. He is lying, he has no intent to deport anyone.
Grow up.

Wow Deelove, calling people "mentally disturbed" - not cool! I am sure that poor innocent victim in the Village no longer feels safe anywhere. ANY gang activity is unacceptable on the east end - they are like cockroaches - if you see one, there are 100's in the walls. Yes, this group is "dated" but if you knew anything about NYC "back in the day" you wouldn't be so flippant about crime and gang activity.

Not saying that it is, but "never" say "never" - it seems too many people don't want to admit there is a problem. Maybe there should be a "12-step program" for those in denial - Step 1 - admit you have a problem.

If nothing else, maybe it will embarrass our elected officials enough to address some of the issues of urban decay instead of "wishing" it away.

About the only thing I can see Sliwa's overgrown boy scouts doing in Hampton Bays is protecting the piping plovers at the beach but that season's over, isn't it? The man is a shameless publicity hound.

Ya gotta' love the "members only" jackets and bonjour jeans though! I think they call it vintage now.
By HB Proud (889), Hampton Bays on Sep 3, 16 2:02 PM
but what do they actually do, call the police is they see something 'illegal' or are they vigilantes?

I think it is reasonable to assume that they would do the same or similar as thy did in NYC. I am personally disgusted of hearing people complain at Town board meeting and Civic Meeting about various nightclubs, homeless camps, public urination, prostitution, drug dealing, etc. and having the Town Officials say they are doing something but nothing seems to get done. Maybe a group of aging hipsters in matching hats and jackets will get their attention.

Try going to the Chase drive-through ATM's on Nugent Street at dusk on a Friday and tell me if you feel safe. I don't. A shady illegal element on both foot and bicycle conjugates there every Friday after working hours, line jumping cars, walking up to the "drive-through only" ATM's, standing at the ATM's or loitering nearby while valid drive-up customers who waited their turn are trying to conduct transactions. These people have a total disregard for the rules and proper etiquette. It's scary ...more

Something happened on North Sea Road one evening about a week ago, that required 5 patrol cruisers and an unmarked plumbers truck with lights. A guy wearing what looked like a heavily padded protective suit got out of the plumbers truck at a house on North sea road where all the cruisers were parked, south of Bartlett tree. North Sea Road was then blocked off. No mention of that in the press.

The gangs are here, definitely. Money laundering has to be done through construction now as the ...more

JAMS, I appreciate that you agree that some people are in denial, but the "west of the canal" folks deserve to live in a safe, gang-free, crime-free community. I suspect you agree with that and just meant that the crime and gang activity won't get the attention it deserves until it hits east of the canal. It is time that the elected officials pay attention to quality of life and crime issues raised by residents on the west side of the canal (who make up most of the voters), or we need to vote in ...more

Too funny. Guardian Angels are coming to the Hamptons! Curtis is an Entertainer in the same mold as Donald Trump. Dangerous gangs in Hampton Bays? If you think that is true then you probably believe that crime is rampant throughout the United States, the Stock Market is at an all time low and the unemployment rate in America is going through the roof. Too funny.
