UPDATE: Monday, 1 p.m.

Support in the form of donations has poured in for the Collins family since a fire destroyed their home and two cars Friday morning on the Shinnecock Reservation.

Kimberly Krupski, whose sister Laura Collins escaped the blaze with her husband, two children and niece, started a GoFundMe page to help cover costs for things such as food, clothing and transportation. About $5,300 of the fundrasier's $10,000 goal has been collected so far.

"Thank you to everyone for your overwhelming love and support," Laura Collins posted on the donation page. "We are still figuring out the next steps but your donations will help make that process much easier for stability for the children. We cannot thank you all enough and may God bless you and your families for helping us in our time of need. Justice will be served and love will prevail."

Donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/2n6rhxqc.

UPDATE: 7:15 P.M. Friday

In a letter sent to tribal members late Friday, the Council of Trustees for the Shinnecock announced that the fire that destroyed two homes on the reservation Friday morning was an act of arson.

The letter notes that Mr. Collins and his family were home when the blaze “was intentionally set on fire by an unknown assailant,” and that they “barely escaped” from their house before it was engulfed by flames. It also says that both homes and a vehicle were destroyed in the blaze.

“We will not let this senseless act of arson stand,” the letter reads. “We have to take a long look in the mirror and ask ourselves what kind of community we have become when Tribal members and their families are almost killed in their own home by a cowardly act of arson.”

When reached Friday evening, State Police said they were still investigating the cause of the fire.

Council members were encouraging anyone who witnessed the crime, or possessed information that could assist in the ongoing investigation, to contact the State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Council of Trustees.

ORIGINAL STORY:

State Police are investigating a fire that destroyed two homes on the Shinnecock Reservation early Friday morning. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the cause of the fire, according to police.

The fire was first reported at about 3:30 a.m., police said.

One of the homes belonged to Dan Collins Jr., the son of Tribal Council Vice Chairman Dan Collins Sr. and the brother of Vanesaa Vasces-Corleone, who has organized several Black Lives Matter rallies on the East End this summer. She posted on Facebook that the house and cars were “completely gone.” The house was set on fire in multiple locations, she posted.

Her daughter, brother, his wife, and their two children were in the home, but were able to escape unharmed. She did not immediately return calls on Friday.

The Southampton Volunteer Fire Department received a call of a structure fire on Thunderbird Lane. The first unit that arrived on the scene advised fire Chief Mike Kampf that the house was fully engulfed in flames, according to 1st Assistant Chief Christopher Brenner.

In addition to the two homes, several cars also caught fire, according to Chief Brenner. The family narrowly escaped, he said.

It took crews about four hours to extinguish the blaze, he said.

One firefighter was transported to Southampton Hospital and treated for heat exhaustion, according to Chief Brenner. Crews from the North Sea, Hampton Bays, East Quogue and Bridgehampton departments were called in for mutual aid, he said.

WHAAAAT?!?

Exactly what is being censored here? It certainly wasn't inappropriate languaqe!

If 27 East is to have editorial oversight, it should be even and consistent, and in that respect, it's quite lacking!

What does this have to do with ''the community''? Starting a race war is an extremely risky business.

This was a letter sent within our community, that wasn't necessary to be included in the Press, reading is fundamental.
By adczeta (78), Southampton on Aug 27, 16 7:15 AM
So is freedom of the press. Truth seems to really offend you.

What an utterly horrifying, barbaric act.
Thank God they escaped. The responsible party that caused this needs to be brought to justice and removed from society
These families need as much love and support as can possibly be offered from every one of us. God bless you.

I should not ask this question but I want to know. Is the suspected arsonist from within or from without the Shinnecock community? I cannot understand in either case - but what the hell is happening in Southampton?
