Jun 10, 2016 9:37 AM

UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.

According to Shinnecock Indian Nation Trical Trustees Chairman Bryan Polite, the victim of the shooting, Joel L. Faison, does not live on the reservation, nor is he a member of the tribe. In its news release about the incident Wednesday, New York State Police said that he was a resident.

UPDATE: Thursday, 11 a.m.

According to Southampton Town Justice Court documents, the shooting occurred at 13 West Gate Road at about 9 p.m. on Monday. Mr. Eleazer fired several rounds at Joel L. Faison, striking him in the lower extremities, causing bleeding and significant pain.

The documents did not indicate Mr. Faison's age or address, and did not offer a motive for the shooting.

Original Story

A Southampton man was arrested by State Police following a Monday night shooting on the Shinnecock Reservation, leaving a resident of the reservation with multiple non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The victim, who police did not identify, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to police.

State Police responded to the scene of the shooting at 9:10 p.m. After an investigation, Justin Eleazer, 26, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and second-degree criminal use of a firearm, both felonies, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor.

Mr. Eleazer was being held pending a scheduled arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court on Wednesday.

The Shinnecock are their own worse enemy. You never hear anything good coming from the reservation.

Actually you do hear good things and nobody makes a single comment. I just posted the Lacrosse game that was hosted on our Reservation, not a single comment, it was right in this paper 2 weeks ago. How about the First Native to graduate from Oxford, youth volunteering to plant at the museum, not a single comment. I can go on, you just notice the negative, that is what broadcast. We have activities on a regular basis, from cultural, environmental and sports. We have are participating in the bike ...more

Actually adczeta, part of the problem is the way this website is set up. I don't recall ever seeing most of the stories you list. There are a few sensational stories on the opening page and everything else is buried somewhere so many will never see them. There are times when a highly commented story disappears (times out???) and other times when I know there is a story but can't find it. Even search doesn't bring it up. Not sure what the solution to that is. I would guess redoing the opening page ...more

I'm sorry about the blanket statement you feel I made. I never heard anything about what you wrote mentioned so I only go what is printed.

The Press also missed the arrival of the Hokolea Hawaiian voyaging canoe in Manhattan last Sunday!! Incredibly moving welcoming ceremony with members of 8 First Nation tribes. The highlight was the Shinnecock Youth Council members singing the welcoming song ,especially superstar to be Butterfly , sorry I didn't catch her complete name. What an incredible presence !! Good things certainly come from the rez! Their canoe coming down the Hudson was a sight to behold too.

Adczeta - don''t take it personally. The Press and press in general, are interested in the ugly stories, the one that rile people up. Write a letter to the editor ranting and raving someone will want to interview you! Send a thank you or good words, they don't have room for that nonsense. It is certainly not indigenous to the Shinnecocks.

There are certain groups that get covered and others that get ignored.

Thank you though for posting what you did. Very neat!
