Special Election Set For Tuesday

Jan 19, 2016 1:35 PM

Two candidates will face off in a special election on Tuesday, January 26, to fill a vacant seat on the Southampton Town Board vacated by former Councilman Brad Bender in November.

Democrat Julie Lofstad and Republican Richard Yastrzemski have run two whirlwind campaigns since the news that Mr. Bender had pleaded guilty to selling oxycodone. The winner of Tuesday’s contest will finish out the two-year remainder of the term of Mr. Bender, who was elected in November 2013 and took office in January 2014.

The salary for the Town Board post is $63,240.

The Candidates

Julie Lofstad is the Democratic candidate from Hampton Bays. This is her second bid for public office after losing in November to running mate John Bouvier and Republican Christine Scalera for a seat at the dais. Ms. Lofstad is a founding member of the Hampton bays Mothers Association and has served on the hamlet’s Parent Teacher Association and Parent Teacher Organization.

Richard Yastrzemski is the Republican candidate from Southampton Village. He has served on the Southampton Village Board since 2008, and has been deputy mayor for four years. He has also served as the village deputy police commissioner and the commissioner for fire and ambulance services in the village. He lost the supervisor race against Jay Schneiderman in November, and this is his first run for a seat on the Town Board.

The Polls

The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on January 26. All registered Southampton Town voters are eligible to participate in the election. Voters can cast the ballots at their regular polling places. More information about polling places can be found at the Suffolk County Board of Elections website, SuffolkVotes.com.
