Votes To Be Impacted By New Southampton Town Board Member

The vacancy on the Southampton Town Board has left several pending resolutions in limbo, meaning that the person elected to fill the seat could have a significant effect on key votes:

1. PPD Moratorium—A planned development district, or PDD, is a zoning mechanism that allows the Town Board to permit development that does not conform to current zoning if certain public benefits can be achieved. PDD opponents feel the they allow too much development, and this fall the Democratic candidates proposed a one-year moratorium on approving any PDDs while the law that allows them is re-evaluated. Board members Christine Scalera and Stan Glinka, both Republicans have come out against the moratorium, while Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, a Independence Party member, and John Bouvier, a Democrat, are in favor.

2. Tuckahoe Center—A group of developers has proposed a 40,000-square-foot grocery store, 15,000 square feet of retail stores and a 3,500-square-foot bank off Magee Street in Tuckahoe. The proposal has been before the Southampton Town Board for over a year, with proponents and opponents alike. The project hit a snag in December when the Suffolk County Planning Commission voted against it, meaning that a supermajority, or four out of five votes, will be required for the Southampton Town Board to approve a change of zoning for the project. While all four board members have recently expressed doubt about the project’s future, the final board member could sway the decision.

3. The Gateway at Bridgehampton and The Hills at East Quogue—Both projects involve PDD proposals. The Hills zone change would involve the construction of 118 homes and an 18-hole golf course off Spinney Road in East Quogue. The Gateway would put 90,000 square feet of commercial and residential space on 13 acres on Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton. Neither proposal will be voted on in the immediate future, as both applications are still in the early stages, but the new board member could set the tone for their future in terms of the benefits requested from the applicants, environmental review requests and ultimately the final vote.

You bet your sweet bippy that 5th vote will decide a lot of crucial issues in the next two years. Right now we've got two Council people on the Dem/Indy side and two on the GOP side. The person elected on Tuesday January 26 will be the swing vote, the decider.

Looking at the questions in this article, Julie Lofstad is willing to consider a PDD moratorium and Richard Yastrzemski is pretty much against it, if I rightly recall their debate positions from November. Tuckahoe Center is a tossup, ...more

Well said.
At some point, not that far down the road - if we keep ignoring & degrading our water supply & bays - we won't be able to drink the water or swim in the bays.
Then, property values will go down & taxes will go up. Who will say "we should have looked after our natural resources more carefully"? Not these "go along to get along" morons.
