Train Hits Car In Southampton On Sunday

Aug 4, 2015 2:17 PM

A man sustained minor injuries after his vehicle was hit by an eastbound Long Island Rail Road train on Sunday afternoon on Tuckahoe Road in Southampton.

Meredith Daniels, a spokeswoman for the LIRR, said the car was hit at 2:15 p.m. after the man stopped it on the tracks near Stony Brook Southampton. As the train approached and the gates came down, he was not able to move it off the tracks, Ms. Daniels said. The man, who is 71 years old and from Flanders, was injured as he exited his vehicle as the train was approaching. There were no passengers in his vehicle.

Ms. Daniels noted that the railroad gates were working properly and descended as they should have.

Southampton Town Police responded to the accident although the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police are conducting the investigation.

The train, which was carrying 130 passengers and originated in Jamaica, was running almost 90 minutes late at the time of the accident. A 1:30 p.m. westbound train from Montauk was also delayed because of the accident, though the car had been cleared from the tracks within 15 minutes.

The man was allegedly violating the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law rule that addresses the operation of a vehicle “around, under or through” railroad gates that are lowered. He was issued a summons.

The LIRR would not release further information about the man.

Well, with all due respect to SPD, this sounds kind of shady!

I saw the SUV that got hit and all I can say is that the driver was very fortunate. It looked to me that the train struck the SUV just in front of the passenger compartment.

So if the gates were working...The driver tried to beat the train?

The guy probably got caught between the two sets of traffic lights with cars in front and behind.

Why would you guess that?Would you pull up and wait on the tracks for traffic to move? Before RR gates come down the light flash for a bit as a warning. Also that is not a busy road. Sounds strange. I would like to hear what really happened.
