Southampton Town Supports State Bill On Future Funding For East Hampton Airport

The Southampton Town Board has voted to support two bills before the State Legislature that would impact how the East Hampton Airport receives and sustains funding in the future.

The bills, which were first pitched last year by Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. and Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, gives future East Hampton Town Boards a longer period of time to pay back any federal funds pertaining to the airport, should they opt to make repayment in the future, and makes it so that the board will be subject to a permissive referendum should they opt to move forward with accepting federal money.

The Southampton Town Board voted in favor of both bills. However, Supervisor Jay Schneiderman abstained from voting to approve the requirement from a permissive referendum, saying it could potentially harm the East Hampton Town Board’s ability to run the airport in the future. The bill, he said, should be more specific, requiring the referendum if the board were to accept federal funds. As it is currently worded, he said, the public could demand a referendum for anything related to the airport, including a deer management plan for surrounding areas.

I'm just curious. Why is the Southampton Town Board voting on something having to do with East Hampton Town?

Is your question a serious one?

East Hampton Airport (HTO) is located just east of the dividing line between the two towns. Noise from HTO affects Southampton Town residents, especially in Noyac. The former EH Town Board showed little concern for airport noise impacting Southampton residents, and the current Town Board faces headwinds in controlling the pro-aviation (that is, pro-noise) commercial interests.

A regional transportation authority should probably control all air and rail traffic on The East End, but until then some NYS overview of things seems warranted, as the present and future EH Town Boards may not be able to withstand the out-of-town commercial chopper interests' desire to invade our peace and quiet. The federal lawsuit is still pending about the vitality of the recent EH laws regulating HTO's hours and so forth.

Thank you Councilwoman Scalera for sticking with us and doing what you say you will do! We in North Sea as I am sure others are grateful. The abstention on Mr. Schneiderman's part is questionable but at least we know where he stands.

Just a reality check - no matter how many times the QSC and its bought-and-paid-for political cronies use the phrase "helicopters", their goals are the elimination of ALL aviation of all sizes in the East End. Their proposed restrictions and limitations on funding are designed to equally harm the local recreational aviation community. Hey Jay Schneiderman - What would be wrong with the public having the ability to request a referendum for anything having to do with the airport? Including a deer management plan? Jeez - Do you serve the public or whom? Who's taxes pay your salary? The public's taxes, yes?
