Motorcyclist Pleads Guilty In Fatal Napeague Crash

May 15, 2012 4:39 PM

A motorcyclist whose pregnant fiancée died in an accident in Amagansett nearly two years ago pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and nine other charges on May 9. Matthew J. Byank, 21, of Manorville will be sentenced on July 18.

Lauren M. Parris, 19, of Mastic Beach was thrown from Mr. Byank’s 2006 Suzuki on May 24, 2010, when he lost control and it crashed into a utility pole on Montauk Highway on Napeague as he was being pursued by East Hampton Town Police.

At the time police said that when an officer attempted to stop Mr. Byank in Montauk for speeding at 9:30 p.m., he fled west on Route 27. Police said the officer continued to pursue Mr. Byank until the officer came upon the crash near Dolphin Drive. Ms. Parris was found unconscious and pronounced dead after being taken to Southampton Hospital.

Mr. Byank, who was also thrown from the motorcycle, was treated for injuries and released.

In Suffolk County Court in Riverhead on May 9, Mr. Byank pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the second degree, unlawfully fleeing a police officer in the third degree, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a valid license, two counts of speeding, failing to keep right, crossing over a double yellow line, passing on the left and failing to produce a valid certificate of inspection.

Suffolk County Justice C. Randall Hinrichs promised a sentencing cap of 3 to 9 years in an upstate correctional
facility, according to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office. Mr. Byank was released on $125,000 cash bail until his sentencing.

If memory serves me correct the victim was also pregnant at the time. 3-9 years less time served and good behavior he will be out in 1-4 years. Doesnt seem fair
