Cars Removed From One Of Two Speonk Sites

Jan 23, 2013 12:56 PM

Southampton Town officials confirmed this week that the estimated 60 vehicles being illegally stored on a property in Speonk were removed on Friday, meeting the court-ordered 4 p.m. deadline.

The town is seeking the permanent removal of the vehicles from the site, which is listed as 1324 Speonk-Riverhead Road. In the interim, Justice Jerry Garguilo granted a temporary restraining order two weeks ago requiring that the New Jersey company J.J. Kane Auctioneers remove the vehicles from the land pending the court’s final decision.

The property is zoned light industrial, which allows for the storage of vehicles, but the owner, James Rambo Inc., does not have site plan approval or a certificate of occupancy for such a use, according to town records.

Cassone Leasing Inc., a company with offices in Ronkonkoma, is also listed as a defendant on the suit for storing about 40 office trailers on the property, also without the proper permits.

Assistant Town Attorney Michael Sendlenski said Wednesday that an estimated 4,500 vehicles still remain at a property listed as 144 Old Country Road, which is adjacent to the Speonk-Riverhead Road parcel. The town is also pursuing the permanent removal of the vehicles in State Supreme Court. Mr. Sendlenski said Copart, a national car auction company, had removed many of those vehicles since the town first filed suit against the company and Frank Grausso Jr., the property owner, in early December, though he said he did not have an accurate estimate of how many remained.

Copart representatives and Mr. Grausso are due in Southampton Town Justice Court on Friday, January 25, to be arraigned on further charges for illegally storing vehicles on the site, which is zoned country residence and does not permit such a use.
