East Hampton Library budget vote this Saturday

Apr 14, 2010 4:16 PM

The East Hampton Library will hold its annual budget vote this Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the library at 159 Main Street in East Hampton.

Registered voters in the East Hampton, Springs and Wainscott school districts will vote on the approval of a 6-percent tax increase, which the library estimates will cost the average taxpayer $4.51 more than last year.

The library is proposing a $1.79 million budget, $1.25 million of which will be raised through taxes. The remainder will be raised through fund-raising, interest on investments, fines and surplus appropriations.

The library plans to spend nearly 11 percent more on programming and 5.7 percent more on materials including books, periodicals and DVDs next year.

The mail-in deadline has passed for absentee ballot applications, but voters have until Friday, April 16, to pick them up in person at the district clerk’s office in their school districts. Absentee ballots must be received by the school district clerks by 5 p.m. on April 18.

Are they out of their minds. We are already in a mountain of debt with taxes to go up and the Library gestapo board wants to raise our taxes. GET OUT and vote NO on this one. The board should be run by the public not guys like Twomey

Are you aware of all you get from a public library? Its a minimal amount when you consider what it gives back...provided, of course, you take advantage of it. I doubt very much that its the library that is causing the mountain of debt.

Apparently the library is not our of their minds!!! THE BUDGET PASSED!! And what are you? one of the crabby old ladies that USED to be on the board??? Why dont you just admit that the the BIGGEST reason you are against the library is because of ONE person on the board you dont like. This isnt highschool, why are "YOU PEOPLE" acting like it is??? GROW UP, ITS A LIBRARY!!
