HBO shooting pilot in East Hampton, Southampton

Housewives with guns blazing would be the last thing people think of when they hear a mention of “the Hamptons.” But that may change if HBO’s new pilot, “Suburban Shootout,” takes off.

The pilot, which HBO bills as a half-hour dark comedy about “rival gangs of homicidal housewives,” starts filming in East Hampton and Bridgehampton this month. The show is a take-off on a British television series of the same name about a city dweller who retreats to an upscale suburb with her husband in search of the quiet life. She’s in for anything but when she finds the welcoming committee is two armed gangs of middle-aged women seeking to recruit her onto their side.

Shooting, photographically, on location in East Hampton and nearby hamlets and villages starts on September 12 and will continue through September 26, said Melissa Braun of Grant Wilfley Casting. The casting agency is gathering locals to play extras in the HBO pilot as well as a USA network pilot that is also filming in the Hamptons this month. The agency held open casting calls at East Hampton Studios in Wainscott in late August, and continues to call for actors through its website, gwcnyc.com.

The list of open calls offers some idea of the impression director—and East Hampton resident—Barry Sonnenfeld of “Men in Black” fame and writer Michelle Ashford have of the Hamptons.

Grant Wilfley Casting sought East Enders to play trophy wives, wealthy men, Hispanic nannies, Hispanic yard workers, people with newer model upscale cars, and a “Stepford Wife”-type woman walking her dogs.

The show will film at some private homes, but also in some public locations that will strike a familiar note, such as Main Street in Bridgehampton. Southampton Town Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Allyn Jackson said that the town issued a $1,800 film permit to use Avenue Park behind the Bridgehampton Historical Society as a staging area for a one-day shoot.

The television crew will also replace the windows on a Main Street house with “sugar glass” and blow out the fake windows with pressurized air, Mr. Jackson said.

Ms. Braun said there will also be a shoot at the Amagansett Farmer’s Market.

HBO applied to East Hampton Town for shooting dates of September 12, 15, 16, 19, 23 and 24, Town Clerk Fred Overton said Monday. Dates and locations are still tentative, as the network is still working out the details with the Town Police and town attorney, Mr. Overton said.

Announced cast members of “Suburban Shootout” include Judy Greer of “Arrested Development” in the lead role of Rebecca; John Travolta’s wife, Kelly Preston, as gang leader Camilla Diamond; Mary Birdsong of “Reno 911” and Michael Weaver of “Super Troopers.”
