In East Hampton Village, Owners Defend Dogs On Beaches

Mar 12, 2013 6:00 PM

Mayor Rickenbach acknowledged the many “bona fide dog owners” in the audience, adding that the culprits were not “the people we’re addressing here today.”

“They’ve encumbered it for everybody,” the mayor said.

Several in the audience said they thought that requiring leashed dogs within a certain distance of the road end would not be unreasonable.

Ms. McNally said what the village was contemplating essentially “mirrors” what the town already has in place. “This doesn’t appear to be a significant change to anyone’s access to the beach,” she said. “They are a commodity,” she said of the beaches. “We’re doing everything to keep them open and available to as many people as we can.”

No changes will be made to the current regulations before a public hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.

There is nothing more frustrating then seeing someone pull up to the beach opening up the door of their car, letting the dog out to poop, then leaving the mess for someone else to clean up.
