Fall Fishing, Summer Weather

Sep 24, 2019 10:14 AM

The fall has now officially begun, though the temps the early part of this week sure wouldn’t make you think of anything but summer. But the fall run has been a good one already. Last week the surf fishing in Montauk was outstanding as several days of east winds drove big numbers of striped bass into the rocky shores of the South Side. When the big swells made the South Side unfishable, the action shifted to the North Side.

The false albacore have been a reliable bet, though not in the big numbers we would be expecting to show. Our only real sniff of chill came right before the onset of the hurricane swell and the warm weather, so it may be a bit before the little tunas really settle in.

Big striped bass have been fairly scarce. There are some decent fish being caught around Shinnecock in the dark and very early morning hours. The entire Montauk charter fleet has basically moved to Rhode Island, and the waters of Southwest Ledge, which is seemingly the only place with a reliable bass bite during the day. But big bluefish are also in residence, and it takes a lot of pulling on wire to get at the ones with stripes. There are plenty of black sea bass to pick away at too, though.

There is one more weekend of fluke fishing to be had. The bite has definitely tailed off significantly in the last week or so, but a lot of that might have to do with the heavy swells that have rolled in, one after another, and look to continue this week as Tropical Storm Jerry rolls by far offshore.

It doesn’t look like the offshore crowd will be going anywhere in the next several days, so we’ll have to wait to see if the good yellowfin fishing in the canyons this summer will continue into the fall.

Plenty of reasons to get out this week.

Catch ’em up. See you out there.
