East Hampton, Pierson, Southampton Athletes Earn Postseason Awards For Spring Season

The success of the East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton boys tennis team continued this past spring, to the tune of an undefeated record and the team’s third consecutive League VII title. (10-0 League VII, 11-2 overall). The Bonackers are 52-2 the past five years in league play.

After defeating No. 12 Miller Place in the second round of the Section XI Team Tournament, No. 5 East Hampton fell to No. 4 Harborfields in the quarterfinals, ending their season. But prior to the team tournament, each one of East Hampton’s 10 starters earned postseason accolades in the individual tournament. Singles players Jonny DeGroot, Ravi MacGurn and Luke Louchheim were each All-County along with doubles players Jaedon Glasstein and Alex Wesley. Max Astilean, Brad Drubych, Jackson LaRose, Matthew McGovern and Miles Clark were each All-Division and All-League.

The East Hampton baseball team showed improvement once again by going 5-10 in League V (5-15 overall). Kurt Matthews, James Foster and Elian Abreu were each named All-League. Information on East Hampton’s softball team was not provided.

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls track team went 2-3 in League VI this past spring and had a handful of athletes reach the state qualifier. Ava Engstrom, Bella Espinoza, Megan “Mimi” Fowkes, Lillie Minskoff, Ashley Peters and Bella Tarbet all earned All-League honors. Information on the boys track team was not provided.

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton/Ross girls lacrosse team won a single game in its 16-game schedule. Pierson’s Grace Perello was named All-Division and the Lady Bonackers were named a New York State Scholar Athlete team.

Pierson/Bridgehampton

The Whalers baseball team made an unprecedented run to the New York State Class C semifinal after going 5-12 during the regular season playing in a mixed classification League VIII. The Whalers team defeated Tuckahoe in the Regional Final to advance to the state semifinal where it lost to Cooperstown, which lost to Ticonderoga in the state final.

Matt Hall and Nick Egbert were the two big award winners for Pierson. Both were named All-League, with Egbert given the Sportsmanship Award at the state tournament and Hall being named the team’s Most Valuable Player during the school’s award dinner.

The Pierson/Bridgehampton/Shelter Island softball team went 4-10 in League VI. Pierson’s Sam Cox was All-League, Pierson’s Sofia Mancino was All-Conference and Shelter Island’s Lauren Gurney was All-League.

Southampton

Caraline Oakley reached the New York State Girls Golf Championships for the second year in a row, where she tied for ninth out of 108 golfers, which earned her All-State status — given to the top 20 finishers — for the second straight year. Only one other Long Island golfer played better than her, Paige Diecidue of Smithtown West, who finished sixth. Diecidue had edged Oakley for the county title two weeks prior. Oakley, who was also named Newsday All-Long Island, was joined by a pair of teammates upstate, Ella Coady and Mia Wilutis, who were both All-County.

After going 2-3 during the League VII regular season, the Southampton girls track team had a successful postseason run. Bridget Ferguson was the Small Schools Champion in the high jump and qualified for the state meet. The 4x400-meter relay team of Gabriela Arnold, Michelle Gagliardo, Dreanne Joseph and Amanda Mannino won the Division IV title for the first time in school history. And Caroline Palumbo was All-Division in the 100-meter hurdles.

The South Fork boys lacrosse team, made up of student-athletes from Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Pierson, Southampton and Ross, went 3-13 overall during its first season in Division I. Southampton’s Luke Marro was named All-Division while East Hampton’s Logan Gurney was All-Division Honorable Division.

The Southampton baseball team reached the Suffolk County Class B postseason after finishing with a 10-8 record in League VIII (12-8 overall). The Mariners went on to defeat Port Jefferson, 13-3, in an outbracket game, but then lost to eventual state champion Center Moriches and then Mattituck in the double-elimination playoffs. Thomas Gabriele was named All-County for his efforts throughout the season, while Matt Chilicki and Alex Petty were All-League. Gabe Camacho was Academic All-League.

The Southampton softball team went 4-10 in League VI. Taylor Pike was named All-County, while Carly Cenzoprano and Emma Wesnofske were All-League.
