UPDATE: Hampton Bays Beautification Association Protest Of Planned Shinnecock Nation Billboards Rescheduled To Wednesday

May 13, 2019 10:49 AM

UPDATE: Monday, 9:30 a.m.

Due to the inclement weather, the group has canceled Monday’s protest and reschedule it for Wednesday at the same time and location. Please check hbba.net for more information.

Original Story:

A local civic group plans a protest of what it calls “Times Square-style” billboards proposed by the Shinnecock Indian Nation along Sunrise Highway near the Shinnecock Canal in Hampton Bays.

At noon on Monday, the Hampton Bays Beautification Association will hold a protest at the rest stop on the south side of Sunrise Highway, off the eastbound lanes. The rest stop is between Exit 65 and Exit 66, as are the two proposed 61-foot-tall electronic signs being erected by the Nation.

“Local residents who relish the quaint, beach lifestyle the Hamptons offers feel the signs are distasteful and out of character with the community,” the Beautification Association said in a statement announcing the protest.

There is nothing quaint about the Hamptons anymore. They are a shell of their beautiful former self. Over crowded, over priced, and overrated.

How is a Billboard that is on sunrise highway affecting Hampton Bays? The little biddies of Hampton bays beautification committee were on board 20 years ago when they wanted to wipe out summer rentals and bars and restaurants. Well they got what they wanted and now you have dozens of people live in in houses illegally in Hampton bays. School taxes going through the roof with the public school full of non English speaking Hispanic kids. No it's not racist it's a fact and its costing millions. A20 ...more

20x30? Man you are a typical liberal with no idea what is going on. I guess you don't know how to read it says it will be 61 feet tall. Keep pushing fake news and lies to fit your agenda snowflake.

It’s stupid to protest over it. However they will be forced to take them eventually by order of NYDOT they are illegal. And no the land they are building them on is not sovereign territory it was decided in 2008 by a federal judge.
By rrrglynnn (23), Hampton Bays on May 10, 19 8:57 PM
The issue of whether the land is sovereign or not has not been decided. The 2003 federal court decision was vacated by the federal appeals court. Since then the
The Shinnecock tribe has been granted nation status by the federal government.
The question of the sovereignty of the property would have to be litigated the NY state department of transportation. The department would have to to get an injunction and litigate the matter. It doesn’t seem like the state has the stomach for ...more

Just a thought, if anyone wishes to protest these structures. Hit them where it hurts, boycott the advertisers.

The Hampton Bays Beautification Association?? They must not do much... have you been to Hampton Bays?
Hampton Bays is the worst of the east end. Hampton Bays is the Mastic Shirley of the Hamptons. It like Eastport complaining about the huge PSEG poles messing up the village. Have you been to Eastport?? The poles are not what make Eastport look like a run down village. Besides all that, the electronic signs still don't belong on sunrise highway and the tribe is just asking for trouble with this ...more

First of all, the notice came from the BOARD not the "civic: group. they never checked with their membership. I sent money to this organization to plant flowers, but that is over IMMEDIATELY. Second, they are NOT a civic, they are a CHARITY under IRC 501(c)(3). This is the most inappropriate action I have ever seen from this leadership.

Lml if they don’t like it look away, now on to more worldly matters!
By shlady09 (14), southampton on May 11, 19 9:06 AM
Just change the name from “Sunrise Hwy” to “Signrise Hwy” I guess.
By resident9 (14), hampton bays on May 11, 19 11:21 AM
Lollllll deelove coming in with some HOT slander with some not so subtle racism! Surprised the Bronx or Brentwood wasn’t thrown in that rant. Chief1 though - now that’s how you say a hard truth without waving the confederate flag

I am not sure what you are referring to on deeloves post. I re-read it. I walk along Main Street from RBS to Squiretown Road on regular basis and it looks awful. Luckily a few of the locations have changed hands with owner occupied properties and they are fixing them up. I believe the HBBA has the stewardship contract and related Town grant with the Town to maintain Main Street. Maybe their efforts are best served in "their own backyard" and not worried about helping Jay out with a rally ...more

A sign on the side of the road is NOT a “Monument”. It’s not a tribute, nor is it art.
It’s a giant lit sign, that’s designed to generate outside revenue from advertisers. NO WAY!
If it’s for their own smokeshops, they can easily advertise on the internet and other means that won’t have the negative visual impact that a giant sign would have. It’s amazing that Native Americans/local resident would want to crap on our landscape with the argument ...more

Resident9 please shut up! You sound very stupid and misinformed. No one is advertising the smokeshops LOL and if they are promoting cigarettes to minors so is everyone else who sells them. Go fight the cigarette companies then if this has you so agitated. You’ll lose that battle as well. Find something more constructive to do with your time because this isn’t it.

Protesting on the side of Sunrise Hwy sounds dangerous. That could be a terrible distraction to all the drivers and cause an accident ( sarcasm)
By toes in the water (884), southampton on May 13, 19 8:02 PM
This is such a waste of time and energy and has Jay's fingerprint all over it. Only he could orchestrate such a circus.
