Odd-Even Gas Rationing Ends After A Week

Nov 20, 2012 12:07 PM

The odd-even gas rationing policy instituted on November 9 in both Nassau and Suffolk counties to alleviate long lines at the pumps after Superstorm Sandy disrupted fuel distribution was lifted at midnight on Friday.

The temporary fuel management policy, which permitted motorists whose license plates ended in an odd number to purchase fuel on odd-numbered days, and those whose license plates ended in an even number on even-numbered days, was lifted following an easing of long lines at stations and the resumption of pre-storm deliveries to most local gas stations, Suffolk County officials announced last week.

The policy was instituted for a week in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. A similar policy was already in place in New Jersey and New York City.

Local officials said they decided to implement the policy after a nor’easter dumped rain and sleet on the region, which was already reeling following Superstorm Sandy. Both storms left essential fuel terminals without power or underwater, slowing the process of transporting fuel to stations on Long Island.

Though the policy was lifted in Suffolk and Nassau counties, as well as New Jersey, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg extended it in Manhattan through this Friday, November 23. He said in a statement that 30 percent of stations in the city were still
not operating as of this past Sunday.

This should be a relief to those who were having trouble figuring out the odd/even system.

It is rumored on other sites that the next rationing system will allow filling your tank only on "prime number" days, to make it simple.
