Brandt Withdraws From State Assembly Race; Thiele Will Be Unopposed

Jul 17, 2012 6:44 PM

Only six weeks after throwing his hat in the ring, Jeremy Brandt, a 36-year-old Sag Harbor native, announced on Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the 2nd Assembly District race.

Mr. Brandt, who owns a small plumbing business and lives with his wife, Melissa, and son Bradley, 2, in Hampton Bays, said he was forced to abandon his attempt to unseat State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. after Suffolk County Republican Party Chairman John Jay LaValle refused to sign paperwork giving Mr. Brandt the Republican line in the November election. If he had opted to continue his campaign, Mr. Brandt would have had only the Conservative Party line.

Mr. Brandt’s withdrawal means that Mr. Thiele will be unopposed when seeking his ninth two-year term in Albany this November.

“It was a little unexpected, but we’ll handle it the right way,” Mr. Brandt said on Tuesday afternoon. “I look forward to helping out Senator [Kenneth] LaValle in his race, and I’m grateful for [Suffolk County Conservative Party] Chairman [Ed] Walsh’s belief in me, and I’m happy that Chairman LaValle even considered giving me the line.”

John Jay LaValle did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Mr. Thiele, also a Sag Harbor native, announced his intent to seek reelection at the end of June. Due to redistricting, Mr. Thiele’s 2nd Assembly District, which covers the entire South Fork and parts of eastern Brookhaven Town, will become the 1st Assembly District starting in January.

“I’ve never run unopposed before,” said Mr. Thiele, an Independence Party member, on Tuesday afternoon. “This will be the first time, and I still plan to campaign, and I still plan to ask people for their vote. It really won’t change much about what I do from now until November.”

Mr. Brandt said he was disappointed that he did not get the chance to debate Mr. Thiele on the issues, but he said he will consider running for public office again in the future.

“I’ll see what happens if the right thing comes along and it works for my family,” Mr. Brandt said. “You haven’t heard the last of me.”

JJ's napeleon complex comes to light again - throwing around his weight to make himself feel important. Thanks for nothing JJ, now Theile gets to continue his reign of double dipping on the tax payers dime (Legislator and Sag Harbor Village attorney).

Interesting that Mr. Brandt tucks his tail between his legs and continues to help the family out . .

I am sorry that no one stepped up to oppose Thiele.

So we have another cross endorsement in the works? Will we have to listen to Freddie ranting about higher gas prices on the East End again? I'm sure he will break out all his usual empty rhetoric. All these years in Office and he has still done nothing - except for himself.

The only thing Fred ever talks about is high gas prices, and they are still 40 to 50 cents higher than western suffolk. Way to go Fred

Brant was suddenly not needed when the deals made among Republican, Independent and Conservative political operatives changed - the last two parties wag the GOP dog nowadays. Dealmakers from all three parties, both elected and self appointed, couldn't care less about the public's best interests. What's good for themselves, their allies and big donors is all that matters. Watch to see who gets appointed to judgeships and to fill vacant assembly, supervisor and board seats in the next year or two ...more

Fred feeds on two government nipples just like Malone.

I love everyone's comments so far. When I think of JJ, I think of Lord Farquard from Shrek. Like Lord Farquard, JJ needs to be taken out by a fire breathing dragon. Are there any out there? If JJ has such a great relationship with Ed Walsh, he should have filed the Wilson-Pacula and let Mr. Brandt run. He let Cornelius Kelly be a lame duck last year against Jay Schneiderman in the Legislator race. Ed Walsh gave the cross endorsement to Mr. Kelly, therefore, JJ should have done the same for ...more

leadership? in politics? Are you friggin' serious? It is a circus of whores and to believe otherwise is an exercise in futility.

>> "He let Cornelius Kelly be a lame duck last year against Jay Schneiderman in the Legislator race."

Common usage of "lame duck" means someone in elected office who either by term limits, re-districting or personal choice, will not be running again.

In this sense, I think you meant that John Jay LaValle allowed Cornelius Kelly be "cannon fodder" last year against Jay Schneiderman by the GOP not better supporting Kelly's candidacy.

The GOP used to stand for something in ...more

Our political system has been co-opted and the voters have been ignored!!
We have many issues locally that require resolution and still the "games"
are played out to no one's satisfaction!! To run unopposed is questionable!
Stop confusing the electorate and strive to energize them to GET THE VOTE
OUT with good candidates!!!

Thiele looks out for Thiele. No one else! Switches party's to suit only himself. High gas prices gives him an excuse to repeat his mantra over and over again without accomplishing anything. He thinks he sounds good but many of us have known his act for a very long time. Sooner, hopefully, the rest of our overburdened taxpayers will catch on to his "game (stay on the government pay roll for life)."

Noting the removal of several previous comments by a non-Thiele fan, apparently the WebEditor looks out for Thiele as well.
