Altschuler Gets Indepence Party Nod

Mar 27, 2012 3:12 PM

Republican Randy Altschuler, who is seeking to challenge Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Bishop for his seat in November, was endorsed by the state Independence Party on Tuesday, according to Diana Weir, Mr. Altschuler’s spokeswoman.

The endorsement is a significant boost to Mr. Altschuler’s campaign and could mean the difference between winning and losing the election, said Ms. Weir. Mr. Altschuler unsuccessfully challenged Mr. Bishop two years ago and lost by a narrow margin of about 600 votes.

“It’s a very, very important endorsement, because, last cycle, there were over 7,000 votes on that particular line,” said Ms. Weir. “So it is a game-changer, as we say.”

The Independence Party supported Mr. Bishop in three out of four of his elections, according to Ms. Weir.

Oliver Longwell, a spokesman for Mr. Bishop, highlighted the fact that in his first election, the congressman unseated incumbent Felix Grucci in 2002 without the Independence Party’s support.

“Voters in Suffolk County don’t vote for a party, they vote for a person,” Mr. Longwell said in an email. “This is especially true for third party lines in high-profile races between well-known candidates. Tim Bishop beat an incumbent in his first race in 2002 without the Independence Party line, and the voters who reelected him in 2010 over Randy Altschuler will know where to find Tim on the ballot again this year.”

Frank MacKay, chairman of the state Independence Party, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment on Wednesday.

The Independence Party is nothing but a "vanity" party created by Frank MacKay to endorse his esoteric political choices. After he ORDERED The East Hampton branch to switch its endorsement from Cohen to Wilkinson, does anyone take it seriously? Were the party name better descriptive of Mr. MacKay's personal political perspective it would be called the "Monarchist" Party.

In response to But I'm a blank! (f.), I amend my post to replace "created" with "used". Thanks for the history.

Once again HHS, you need not concern yourself with facts. The Independent Party was formed by Tom Golisano when he ran for Governor. He amassed enough votes to get the "C" line, forcing the Conservative Party to the "D" line. Though Golisano lost, the line remains. Frank McKay, ever the opportunist took command and has worked hard at making it his own. This endorsement essentially ends the race. Like it or not, the Independent line has enough "oomph" to sway elections. Look at it's track record. ...more

But I'm a blank, take off the sack cloth and remove the ashes. Tim Bishop is a long way from dead. Consider the facts. Tim won the first time around against Congressman Grucci (the fireworks king) without the line. Last year Bridget was re-elected without the line.
It is a Presidential year and traditionally more Democratic voters than Republicans feel the urge to exercise their voting franchise in those years. Consider also that Mr. Outsource, er, Altshuler, will, more than likely face ...more

You make some very valid points Neil, but I think the line has more juice than you give it credit for. Every race has different dynamics as you well know, but this loss of an endorsement is going to hurt Mr. Bishop.
I'm more of a cold milk and warm tollhouse cookies kind of guy, but thanks anyway.

Job shipping Randy will never get in. Randy and The Tea Party are finished.
Randy's desire to outsource American jobs to India will not work with the good people of Suffolk County.

Yes, I would. Mr. Bishop is deserving of an endorsement while Mr. Altschuler is a know snake from New Jersey who out-sourced tens of thousands of American jobs. What a completely inane question.

I don't know what a "know snake" is, but I don't hold Mr Altschuler in very high regard either. The point I was making, and that yo missed is that Mr. McKay endorses those who he thinks will benefit him and increase his power base the most.
If you believe that Mr. McKay and his party has no principles, why would you want Mr. Bishop to accept their endorsement?
By But I'm a blank! (1283), Hampton Bays on Mar 21, 12 5:37 PM
In my opinion if Anna Throne Holst and Fred Thiele have any political morality and truly believe Tim Bishop the right person to be our Congressman they will immediately sever their enrollments in the Independence Party. If not, we must assume they are as lacking in principles as the party in which they are currently enrolled members.

Seminar Poster: Just to set the record straight I have been vocally and public opposed to cross-endorsements since long before the Independence Party came into existence. We are the only state that allows candidates more than one line regardless of the number of endorsements. I have a long history on both the political and governmental fronts seeking legislation to remove this blight on the electoral system in New York State.

I don't care who they endorse, it remains a breeding ground ...more

You are either kidding or you need to go back and reread my comment. It's pretty clear that the lack of cross-endorsement by the Indie Party for Congressman Bishop has nothing to do with my opinion (and I stress here and in my original comment that is was my opinion) that New York should join the other 49 states who have banned the practice.

What say Tim integrates a way for the people to voice a "yay or nay" on legislative issues? Talk about civic participation, eh?

Maybe there could be an app for that.

Thank you for drawing attention to the Fraud that is Barry Otero. Barry was forced to give 10 year numbers. By having the bulk of this garbage start 3 years ahead, his 10 year costs included 3 years when the rig wasn't even operational. As we get close and as the required 10 year figures are updated, we will have less and less time with nothing happening. So in essence, now the shady attorney's from chitown's numbers include only 2 years of no operation and they are increasing exponentially. ...more

This Independence party endorsement is huge despite what Bishop's people say. In the last election Bishop won by 593 votes and Bishop received 7,370 votes on the Independence party line. If 300 of the 7,370 people who voted for Bishop on the I line vote for Altschuler, theoretically Altschuler wins. If Altschuler picks up 2000 of those votes and the remaining 5000 still vote for Bishop on the D line, Altschuler wins by 3,500 votes. I would be very concerned if I were Bishop. Regardless of some peoples feelings for Tim, Should you allow the seat to be lost to an Up Islander, you can forget about any representation on the East End. Alschuler will put Smithtown on the map. I love the East End and we need to keep as much representation seated here. We have Jay on a County Level, Fred from the State and Tim in Congress. Think about it.

Thing is, who supports McKay's Indy party candidates, the people like Fred Thiele, Jay Schneiderman, & Anna Throne-Holst, who are actual members of his party? Not the Republicans, that's for sure. It's the Dems, these people run on the Dem line as well as the Indy line on the ballot, Dems give money to their campaigns, Dems carry their nominating petitions, and Dems go door to door and work the phones campaigning for them. Bishop does what Grucci did, he takes care of his family and relatives using his office to provide jobs and perks the voters do not get. Bishop ignored his constituents and voted for Obama Care which is bankrupting this country. HE did not listen to the voters and did what was in his political best interest and shoved this down our throats. I have not forgotten and will do what I can and support Randy for Congress...........
