Bishop Supports Ethics Investigation Into Weiner; Will Return Contributions If "Tainted"

Jun 7, 2011 6:10 PM

U.S. Representative Tim Bishop said Tuesday that he supports an ethics investigation into actions by U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner of New York, who admitted Monday to sending sexually explicit photographs to women over Twitter, then lying about them.

“Congressman Weiner’s personal behavior is deeply distressing; however, the decision about his future is ultimately up to him, his family, and his constituents,” Mr. Bishop said in a written statement passed on by his spokesman. “I support the call for an official investigation of the House Ethics Committee to determine whether Congressman Weiner’s actions have violated the rules of the House of Representatives.”

Mr. Bishop, who represents eastern Long Island, was one of several Democrats criticized by Republicans Tuesday for accepting campaign contributions from Mr. Weiner in the past. A spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee characterized the contributions as “tainted” in a press release that targeted Mr. Bishop and two of his colleagues.

Mr. Bishop said he will return the $10,000 his campaign has received from Mr. Weiner, a Democrat who represents parts of Queens and Brooklyn, if an investigation finds that the funds are indeed tainted. Mr. Bishop returned $15,000 he received from Representative Charles Rangel after the Ethics Committee found the Manhattan Democrat guilty of 11 counts of ethics violations last year.

“In the past, I returned campaign contributions from a colleague when the Ethics Committee determined that his fundraising activities were tainted by ethics violations,” Mr. Bishop said. “In this case, I will continue to base my judgments on the facts and the bipartisan deliberations of the Ethics Committee.”

in my opinion, we have to start cleaning house and demand a higher standard. it really doesn't matter what letter is after the representative's name, or at least it shouldn't. we should all want decent people representing us. these knuckleheads on both sides of the aisle have been getting away with everything for ever. the early departure to re-hab would indicate he's not going anywhere. so it'll be up the voters to state at the polls whether they think guys who send pics of their junk to younger ...more

Have you been contacted by the authorities yet?

They have assured me you're claims of filing false reports about a former supervisor to Homeland Security will be investigated.

I can't wait for you to answer for your crimes.

Sorry for the multiple typos, but the thought of this hypocrite who lambasts conservatives as evil and claims the moral high ground being caught red handed has got me giddy.

Is filing a false report to DHS an example of your ethical standards?

Your mother should be ashamed of the low life she raised.

You just can't answer that question can you?

to RealityFirst:

I can't wait either. If Homeland Security subpoenas a poster over his allegation that someone is a subscriber to Al Jazeera(!!), HS has been over-funded, presenting Congress with another opportunity to save some money. Would you expect the same reaction if he were alleged to be a subscriber to Fox News(!!).

If you're interested, search YouTube for Bill Maher: The Weinerlogues with Jane Lynch (she's from the show Glee) - a reading of Weiner's unedited texts with 'Lisa from Vegas' - be warned, it's absolutely foul, but pretty funny too.
