Town Employee Arrested For Unauthorized Use Of Payloader

Apr 6, 2016 11:23 AM

A man employed by the Southampton Town Highway Department was arrested by New York State Police last month, accused of using a payloader after business hours.

Roosevelt Sykes, 47, of Riverhead entered the highway yard on Corwith Street in Bridgehampton on March 23 after it closed for the day, according to police. After trespassing into the yard, Mr. Skyes used one of the town’s payloaders to remove material from a pile of asphalt millings.

Mr. Sykes was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle and petit larceny, both misdemeanors, and trespassing, a violation. He was taken to the Riverside barracks for processing and was released with an appearance ticket. He is due to appear at Southampton Town Justice Court on May 4.

Alex Gregor, superintendent of the town’s Highway Department, did not respond to a request for comment.

CSEA will protect his job. They own the Supervisor and a few town council members.

oh please give the guy a break,,,a reprimand from the Highway Supervisor ,why involve state police and the justice system.I always say what would Donald Trump do in this situation.

what is an "asphalt milling" ?
By CaptainSig (716), Dutch Harbor on Apr 3, 16 5:46 PM
Asphalt millings are the debris from pulling up old asphalt roads before repaving. They are pretty much worthless except to use as a fill or base for a driveway, etc. Poor guy probably thought he was doing the town a favor. But, he should have asked his supervisor for permission instead of sneaking in after work.

This seems like overkill to me. A warning or being written up seems more appropriate. Now this guy has been arrested and publicly humiliated. Who hasn't used the office photocopier after hours for personal reasons? I sure did and was never arrested.

Forgot to add that I thought it was strange that Southampton Town police didn't make the arrest they have arrested town employees in the past.
By lawnman (21), easthampton on Apr 4, 16 9:26 AM
I heard on the grapevine that you are on desk duty if you work for the Town and awaiting court appearance,,,any body know if this is the case,,,,one less person to pick up my branches,,yikes

The article fails to note where this took place - was it within the confines of the highway yard or outside in the street? One would be safe and one would not be as safe. In any case this man is always working and always cheerful - waves as he passes - friendly - to my mind the kind of employee Southampton would like to keep. Wouldn't a warning have been sufficient?

when do the rest of the employees go down for using town equipment without King Gregors permission?
By politcal pawn (121), Flanders on Apr 10, 16 7:09 PM
I think it was poor judgement on the defendants part. What value are asphalt millings to anyone? It should have been handled internally.

Question, how many times can an employee get a break before the govt gives a dismissal? Just asking for all the employees so they know.

What I am wondering is that Anna Throne just shot her video in town hall for congress after hours. Since Mr. Sykes got arrested for using town equipment after hours I think Mr. Schneiderman or Anna Throne should be arrested also for doing the same exact thing. Someone higher up must of known what was going on or she was trespassing. Just because they are higher up they won't even be talked about. Its disgusting. Those two should be arrested just like Mr. Sykes was.
